Provencal colours and lifestyle.
Sabine Stenert and Jean Claude Hautin, two artists who have been
working under the name Tamba Poteries for 10 years, set up their
studio in an old limestone plant, where they found ample space to
create their powerful ceramics. The objects are either hand-made or
wheel- thrown.
The earth they use contains plenty of fire clay, which gives the
pots their unique authenticity. First, the articles are dried and
then burnt at 1000o C in a special kiln that the artists have
constructed themselves and that measures 2 m3.
They place the objects in the kiln together with special green
plants that react with clay when burnt. Although the plants burn
completely, they leave behind unusual impressions on the pots. Each
burning brings new surprises and each piece is unique. The pots are
extremely resistant to frost due to a very high aluminium content in
the clay. The pots can be planted immediately and with time they
acquire a beautiful patina. For planting purposes a hole can be made
in the bottom of the pot, upon which a layer of pebble stone is laid
and, on top of it, the soil. Whether planted or just a decoration,
these pots with their exceptionally simple beauty cannot but charm
everyone.
