Lace made of agave fiber

The benedictine monastery at Hvar was founded in 1664. Originaly it was known for its spritual mission. It gained global fame by the lace made of agave fibers. This manufacturing method is found only in Hvar and is passed on from generation to generation for approximately 100 - 120 years.

The making of fibers is a long and painstaking procedure. The strings are extracted from the leaves and are later specially processed untill the fibers turn white and become ready for embroiding.

There are three types of lace:

  1. TENERIFA - made with a small needle on a paper basis.
  2. TENERIFA with the net - made with a small needle and a metal mold. Upon finishing the lace with the paper model the work continues with the metal net.
  3. NET - the metal net basis is used to apply different stitches with a regular sewing needle.

The lace is not being made from existing pattern. The nuns are following their own immagination and so every lace is an original piece of art. Each pattern that is being created is then executed with precision, skill and above all patience.
